the KAROO Story
Do the difficult things while they are easy and do the great things while they are small.
A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.
I am an economist by training. Perhaps that is why it is so obvious to me that there is a universal market failure in this essential social ingredient, leadership, and by implication – leaders.
There is a bottomless demand for leaders and leadership at every turn; in every walk of life; in every social domain, but the supply is unsatisfying in the extreme.
Leadership and leaders – the words and concepts – are heavily traded in our lexicon; they are used as ubiquitously as any profanity.
But, it seems, like Humpty Dumpty tells Alice, a word can mean anything we want it to mean:
“When I use a word,’ Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, ‘it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.’
’The question is,’ said Alice, ‘whether you can make words mean so many different things.’
’The question is,’ said Humpty Dumpty, ‘which is to be master — that’s all.”
The market certainly responds to the ever-present demand for leaders, churning them out of business schools, leadership programs and through the musings and writings of anointed gurus and entertainers at great cost, mind you. The real cost is the damage done to every space they venture.
There are also multitudes of claimants to the label; leaders abound in word and title; but seldom fit the deed or the nature of the demand.
Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s The Rime of the Ancient Mariner illustrates this conundrum impeccably:
“Water, water, everywhere,
And all the boards did shrink;
Water, water, everywhere,
Nor any drop to drink.”
So, we need to desalinate a lot of water!
And, desalination is difficult – it takes a lot of energy, a lot of cleverness; it requires a REVOLUTION in ideas and practices.
That is how Karoo has come into being.
It cannot be business as usual.
The old ways are obsolete and must be left behind;
they got us to where we are, they cannot repair the mess.
Karoo brings you Influential Leadership, a 21st Century leadership practice for 21st Century demands.
It is fundamentally designed to turn matters upside down; it is out with the tried and failed, and in with the promise and opportunity of the new.
Welcome to Karoo’s Influential Leadership REVOLUTION.
At first encounter the Karoo may seem arid, desolate and unforgiving, but to those who know it,
it is a land of secret beauty and infinite variety.
‘Karoo’, the brand name given to Influential Leadership, is derived from ‘the Karoo’, a geographic part of South Africa.
The Karoo is an elongated semi-desert area in the south western part of the country.
It has two adjacent zones separated by a mountain range.
‘The Little Karoo’ lies towards the coastal plateau and ‘the Great Karoo’ across a mountain range on the inland side.
Together these areas are similar in size to Germany; making up almost one third of South Africa’s total area.
The Karoo derives its name from the original people who lived in these parts, the Khoi,
who aptly referred to the area as Garo, meaning ‘a hard, dry, thirsty land’.
The Karoo is represented in Karoo’s logo by the semi-desert colours –
shales, browns and olive green – the orange sun, the windpump vanes and the ever-watchful Meerkat.
These are complimented by the NASA font.
I am what I choose to be; if not, I am what circumstances make me.
I am a South African, by birth and choice.
I have made it my business to Influence better outcomes for South Africa (as a start!).
