In honour of COVID-19, billions of people across the globe have suddenly been subject to all manner of government enforced restrictions; lockdowns, curfews, banning of commerce, prohibitions on the sale of liquor and tobacco products, military deployments, and inordinate jail time for transgressors.
And, trillions of monies have been “found” to rescue people and businesses.
In February it was the old world. One month later, on the back of an unseen invader, governments have activated themselves. This overnight turn-around begs two questions from citizens.
1. Where has my government been?
South Africa rescued itself from self-destruction 25 years ago; but has been determined to do it again, just through a different route this time.
In this time my government has allowed 980, 000 (nine hundred and eighty thousand) citizens to be murdered, killed, or left to die of AIDS. The economic losses are incalculable, not only of these deaths, but the destruction of infrastructure through lack of maintenance, the trashing of the value of the currency, systemic corruption, the deployment of unqualified and incompetent executives and managers in state enterprises. The list is so depressingly long…
Mostly the poor of 1995 are still the poor today. Those who lack proper education, housing, employment, dignity, and hope are hardly unchanged. But they are hungrier, and less inclined to listen to promises.
Let us return to those almost 1 million deaths.
Where were you Mr President, my government and all our resources, when we citizens were murdering each other, killing each other on our roads of death, and not saving the ill?
Why did you talk, promise, but do nothing? Did we not count then?
Why have you suddenly awoken from your slumber to deploy every state apparatus and find money to fight COVID-19?
Why are you saving us now?
2. What will you do with us afterwards?
Also, Mr President, what will you do with us if we secure victory over this invader?
What will happen to us as you go about your life, with your blue-light cavalcade, your smart suite, your promises, and your easy life?
What will be better in our lives, Mr President? What can we look forward to? What hope will there be for us?
If we are still hungry, unemployed and unemployable, unsuitably educated, unsafe in our homes and streets; why should we be saved?
Why do you try to save us now Mr President? What will become of us?
If we are not to have a better life, then do not pretend you care. Rather leave us to our own devises, as you have till now.
