the influential Leadership story
Leadership, eXcellence and a Better life are choices
that we make, all the time.
influential Leadership equips us with tools to
pursue eXcellent decisions at each Leadership Moment.
an influential Leader is about radical change –
they are willing to walk away from the obsolete and failed,
to take on a 21st Century alternative –
to pursue eXcellence,
for the better – for more.
influential Leadership is Business Unusual
influential Leadership (iLP) is born out of my life-journey thus far; tackling diverse formal studies, doing many different jobs in various places and environments, and broad-ranging travels.
Being somewhat of a seeker has also contributed to looking for new, different and possibly better paths and solutions
to those that have been presented as ‘gospel’ for too long.
I studied economics (and political science, strategy, and leadership – amongst others) and as most learnings tend to do, they colour the way we see and interpret the world.
For a time I practiced as an economist looking at, and finding solutions to, market failure; in particular why markets fail at the bottom-end of the market (pyramid) and how these can be addressed.
Thus, with a heightened sense of the nature of failed markets, what causes them and how to solve them, I have engineered influential Leadership as a credible response and solution to what is clearly not working in the leadership realm.
The existing leadership models (if we can call them that) are as out-dated as a Model-T Ford in a Tesla line-up.
While the market has failed, we have also let ourselves down because we keep buying into unsuccessful ideas and practices; grasping at the same obsolete ideas that have been wrapped in a new cover.
It has been a great market for re-selling the same pre-packed matter, yet never solving the problems; it has been easier to reproduce impressions than craft originals, ones befitting the 21st Century.
Karoo is in the business of originals.
No matter how difficult it is to construct a new route, or how much push-back there is from vested interests.
Also, leadership, especially Influential Leadership, is tough, it is one of the most demanding behaviours any of us will ever face.
I know this first-hand as I learn and fall and grow at each Leadership Moment.
I am an influential Leader in training!
Being an influential Leader begins with the choice – to be.
It is akin to acquiring any difficult skill – we choose, then we obtain knowledge and practice, and practice until we are better and better.
There is no magic.
None are born to it.
It is not natural – conversely.
It is not a right, an office, a position or a title.
That is the old way – the one that does not work, that got us here.
To shake off convention, to radically alter direction, to aim for eXcellence – these are difficult matters.
The past leadership approaches excluded the majority of people from Leadership Moments that effected them,
leading them to believe that “others” would take care of the “big decisions”.
These “messiahs” took care of themselves, only.
That time is over. There is a new alternative, fit for the 21st Century.
influential Leadership is democratic – it is inclusive – now each of us is responsible for our Leadership Moments.
iLP offers everyone the opportunity and the responsibility to be an influential Leader in their life, in their world.
If the opportunity is declined, given up – then we have failed ourselves and our closest and dearest too.
Those who walk away, who reject their responsibility, have no right to enjoy either the successes
that are achieved without them, or to moan and groan about the miserable state of affairs that exists.
The question that each of us must face is:
- Am I courageous enough to be part of the solution?
KAROO = influential Leadership
In the BUSINESS of equipping people to be influential Leaders –
who pursue eXcellence to enjoy better Lives, inclusively
the X is the influential Leader – it is you and me
Let’s start at the core…
iLP contains a series of links that hold it together.
The one link is eXcellence, which has two sub-elements:
- eXcellence as an input or how we strive to do things as influential Leaders.
The X represents the activity and the person,
the individual, that chooses to lead and be the X-factor.
- eXcellence is also an output or outcome.
In this instance eXcellence is an objective of iLP;
it is why leaders and leadership are important.
The influential Leader is the X-factor in eXcellence.
Other elements – such as structures, systems, processes, technology and environment –
are all contributors to eXcellence – they may be necessary, but are insufficient.
It is the person – the individual – that ensures eXcellence.
The purpose of eXcellence is what 7 701 080 000 people all want –
success and a Better life –
So, what is ‘eXcellence’? It is:
- The quality of being outstanding – superior – brilliant
- eXcellence, simply put, is being eXcellent
- Being excellent is at the tip of achievement
Aristotle tells us that:
Excellence is an art won by training and habituation.
We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence,
but we rather have those because we have acted rightly.
We are what we repeatedly do.
Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.
An influential Leader always pursues eXcellence.
everyone wants a Better Life
The other related objective of iLP is the notion of “a better life”.
A Better LIFE – is a person’s lived experience
In our daily lives a better life translates into things like:
- a better job (more money, greater scope, higher income, recognition …)
- a more successful business (bigger, more profitable, recognition, greater market share, and so forth)
- improved (more) choices (to live, work, travel, education, health-care)
- convenient transport – whether private or public (access to employment, choices, fun)
- homes that meet our needs (dignified housing)
- safety and security in our homes, at work, moving about
- participating in recreation activities, a sports team (life satisfaction, a sense of fulifilment)
- more leisure time (a work-life balance)
- freedom to express our views without censure (freedom to participate in civic engagement)
- to enjoy health and longevity
Everyone wants a better life, and to be a success.
But, there is a but…
Success and a Better Life are not rights.
iLP places the locus of responsibility for achieving success and a better life with the individual.
The person responsible for my life is me.
No matter our prevailing conditions, each of us is the ‘X’ factor in our lives;
we are responsible for our success and making it better (or not).
Yes, we each have less or more to overcome,
but that is simply how the cards of life are served.
The French historian, philosopher and writer Voltaire (1694 – 1778)
sets up this influential Leadership premise neatly:
Each player must accept the cards life deals him or her:
but once they are in hand, he or she alone must decide
how to play the cards in order to win the game [of life].
the road I have taken made all the difference…
the road taken…
Leadership is a choice –
influential Leadership is a choice –
Each time you face a Leadership Moment you have a choice.
Is that not a fantastic opportunity?
And, when we continuously make the right choices,
we become better influential Leaders all the time.
Here is your moment.
Join the Influential Leadership REVOLUTION!
Three stepping stones are laid out below to nudge
your decision –
1. If the mind is blind; the eyes cannot see.
There are none so blind as those who will not see… The most deluded people are those who choose to ignore what they already know…
2. Desperation is the raw material of drastic change. Only those who can leave behind everything they have ever believed in can hope to escape.
William S. Burroughs
It cannot be business as usual.
If we’re to make life fundamentally better, for ourselves and others, we cannot use obsolete recipes.
3. Example is not the main thing in influencing others. It is the only thing.
Our behaviour counts for more than anything else; we are what we do.
So, here we are – at the proverbial fork in the road.
A. OPTION #1:
If you have evidence that you are the best you can be, or that you have done all that you can to make you,
your home, team, school, department, business, work-place, community and country the best they can be;
then Influential Leadership has nothing to offer you.
Close this site and move on…
B. OPTION #2
If you think that maybe, just maybe, there is work to be done, in your life,
in your home, family, team, business, work space, country – keep going.
If you too have arrived at the point where you see how much better things can be,
but unsure how to proceed, or simply g@tvol (fed-up) of the tried and failed offerings,
– then influential Leadership has answers.
Take the next step!
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I
I took the one less travelled by,
And that has made all the difference.
