Back to the Beginning
First Principles
Edition 3225 of On Leadership is the fourth in a series on iLeadership in Workspaces.
It was my original intention to take us into a conversation about Social Agency as a workspace productivity lever.
However, from the sorts of feedback and comments thus far, I reckon we first need to take a breath to revisit two fundamental First Principles contained in the Influential Leadership System.
| Refresh
First Principles are foundational truths or established laws that cannot be deduced any further. They are the source ideas from which all reasoning builds—like the atoms of thought. First Principles Thinking:
|
There are many moving parts in the Influential Leadership System so it happens that we might lose sight of all of them when we examine just a slice of the System at a time, as we are doing in our Workspace series.
So, before we tackle Social Agency and iLeadership in our workspaces, let us refresh two Influential Leadership First Principles.
The Influential Leadership System Architecture
Refer to the infographic below that sets out the Influential Leadership System Architecture. If you click on the image, it will open a larger version.
What is Influential Leadership?
Yes, the architectural map is quite an eyeful and might appear complex, but what it offers is an anchor, which leads to the First Principle we must refresh:
- #1: What is Leadership—in our case—what is Influential Leadership?
If you have taken the Alpha Programme you will recall that we examine the ‘woolly’ legacy notion of leadership—leadership has become anything, everything and thus nothing. The Alpha Programme takes a tour through 100 ‘definitions of leadership’—can they all be right, useful, meaningful?
How many definitions are there of ‘gravity’ in physics? 1One…
| Clarity vs. Woolly
Clarity, in its most vital form, is the ability to illuminate meaning without distortion or fog; it is being coherent and intleggible. In the context of clarity, ‘woolly’ is a metaphorical adjective that describes something as vague, imprecise, or muddled in thought or expression |
| Trait | Clarity | Woolly |
| Definition | Sharp, precise, well-structured | Vague, imprecise, muddled |
| Cognitive Impact | Enables focused reasoning | Leads to confusion or drift |
| Ethical Implication | Transparent and accountable | Obscures responsibility |
| Language Use | Direct, unambiguous | Euphemistic, convoluted |
| Leadership Effect | Builds certainty and alignment | Breeds uncertainty or apathy |
Influential Leadership is:
The application of Social Agency to influence and shape people’s lived lives and life trajectories for their betterment.
Why? What is the Purpose of iLeadership?
- #2: The second First Principle deals with the genesis of leadership—what is leadership for? What is its purpose? What is it meant to do for us (in our workspaces and anywhere else)?
The question is asked in the same manner as we would ask:
- What is the purpose of accounting, management, engineering, marketing, sales and so forth.
Other than iLeadership, have you ever found a clear definition of the purpose of leadership? If you ask 100 people you might get 99 different answers.
Not so with iLeadership!
Why is this important? For clarity, so we know precisely what iLeadership must achieve in our workspaces and lives. So we have clarity…
| The Purpose of iLeadership is to influence and shape events, conditions and circumstances for the betterment of people’s lives. |
When we combine these two First Principles, we have CLARITY on the what and the why (purpose) of iLeadership, which we’ll take with us as we head into On Leadership 3325 to consider Social Agency as the productivity lever for engaged workers.
Why First Principles Thinking Matters
Whether it is building ones Influential Leadership practices into an Apex Skillset, or any other life endeavour, it is useful to revisit First Principles regularly. They help us obtain clarity and clear logjams in our thinking and behaviours, and reset our sights.
Here are four reasons why it matters:
- Cuts through assumptions and inherited beliefs
- Sparks innovation by challenging norms
- Encourages original thought over borrowed models
- Builds clarity in decision-making and leadership.
Until next time, keep tackling each Leadership Moment with Influential Leadership!
