Make the Right Things Happen?

In every walk of life, only a few people truly make the right things happen.

This ability is both a choice and a learned capability.

Dr Nicholas Butler, once the President of Columbia University in New York, articulated this beautifully during an anniversary speech.

He divided people into three distinct groups:*

The vast population of this earth, and indeed nations themselves, may readily be divided into three groups.

  1. The few who make things happen,
  2. The many more who watch things happen, and
  3. The overwhelming majority who have no idea what’s happening.

Every person is born into this largest group.

It is up to each individual to choose whether they will rise to the second group or even to the first.

Butler, an exceptionally educated and successful individual, recognised that while education and circumstances significantly influence our lives, but they are not enough on their own.

Beyond these factors, each of us must choose whether we will influence and shape the world around us or merely be spectators; whether we will contribute our share or live off the contributions of others.

Influential Leadership builds on this truth.

Yes, we must choose to make things happen, but it is crucial that we focus on making the right things happen.  There is a significant qualitative difference.

The Influential Leadership doctrine is to drive productive change.

Influential Leaders are the catalyst for betterment.

Regardless of where we are on our life paths—whether just starting out, progressing steadily, or nearing the end—we face the same choice every day:

  • Make the right things happen, or
  • Behave in destructive ways, or
  • Be indifferent, which perpetuates destructiveness.

Choose to do right—influence and shape change for the better.
