Leadership SuperGlue
DISCIPLINE, self-discipline, is the capability to control one’s instinctive (un)thinking, words, impulses and actions to achieve productive responses and outcomes.
That is it!
Easy?
Nope!
Who of us chooses discipline time after time, when the forces of easiness, habit, predilection, peer pressure and custom offer us the road well-travelled?
Few.
Why is discipline a worthy and productive capability?
Life is surely about having a good time right now and letting tomorrow take care of itself?
Yes, that is one way of living, and many people do it that way.
But, that is not the Leadership way, and not the way of people who change events, conditions and circumstances for the better—for their own life and the lives of others.
Influential Leadership is scarce, mainly because it is so hard, difficult, demanding, tough, lonely…
And one of the reasons Leadership is so challenging is because it requires masses of discipline.
Let us consider just one element of the Influential Leadership System, the Leadership process that is defined by Social Agency.
You will recall that each of us has latent Social Agency, which is our capability to do just three ‘simple’ things.
To—
- Think (critically)
- Choose (smartly)
- Act (purposefully)
Each of these capability elements requires profound discipline, and that is why they are not simple at all.
But why should you and I bother with being self-disciplined?
Let me offer a humble eight reasons…
- To be the best we can be.
- To achieve remarkable things.
- To live a life beyond the ordinary.
- To succeed at what we set out to do.
- To set a powerful productive example.
- To be recognised and respected for our achievements.
- To position ourselves to lead at each Leadership Moment.
- To influence and shape our life and others’ lives for the better.
Discipline, self-discipline is the SuperGlue that binds the practice of Influential Leadership together. Without it, there is no Leadership.
