‘Water’ is the third element in the trio of breadcrumbs I laid out in Leadership Weekly Note 29/24.
So, where does the ‘water’ breadcrumb fit in the Influential Leadership context?
In its heart.
Those of you who thought about the three breadcrumbs I presented might have likened the water theme to one of the so-called ‘life elements’ of fire, earth (soil), metal, wood and water.
Others might have rightfully concluded that water is a necessary requirement for life forms on Earth.
Perhaps you also thought about the physical properties of water as it flows and moves and changes form as it needs to.
All of these have elements of the Influential Leadership story.
Influential Leadership, Life and Water
I highlight just three of the many associations between the practice of Influential Leadership and life-securing water.
- Water is one of the two chemical compositions that make life possible on Earth. Sure, we can live without Influential Leadership, but in its absence, life is nasty and brutish—look around. In places where Influential Leadership is practiced life is better.
- Water appears soft and formless and easy to get around, but it is harder than rock. In the fulness of time, see how a jagged rock becomes a smooth stone. Influential Leadership does not bludgeon behaviour into shape. It holds fast to its philosophy and principles while it influences and shapes events, conditions and circumstances for the better through indefatigable personal example.
- Water flows everywhere, into every nook and cranny. Influential Leadership is practiced in all our domains—in every home, classroom, team, community, business, government and country—it is everywhere, smoothing the rough out.
Since the beginning it has been proper Leadership by just a few that has made life better, even if only on the margins.
Imagine how much better things could be if more of us took up the opportunity to lead.
It is a choice.
To be like water, we need to have the properties of water.
If you are already an Influential Leadership Activist, you will already be shaping your and other’s lives.
If you have not yet chosen to activate your Leadership, check in with me, it would be great to have you on board.
Be like water…
