Influential Leaders Think – Choose – Act
The Influential Leadership Process
The definitive features of Influential Leadership (iLP) bear endless reiteration… the Process is one of them.
Repetition and reinforcement cement the matter into our Leadership vocabulary and behaviour, and it shows up the feeble nature of legacy leadership.
One of iLP’s defining features is the Leadership Process that is triggered when we face a Leadership Moment. The Process is called a person’s Social Agency and works as follows:
- A person who is equipped with Influential Leadership recognises a Leadership Moment. i.e., they are Leadership conscious.
(Reminder: A Leadership Moment is an event, condition or circumstance that activates the PRACTICE of Leadership.)
- The Leadership Process (our Social Agency) culminates in ACTION, “the doing”, as it is called.
- Our Social Agency, a three-step sequential Process, is founded on our capability to:
-
- Think critically,
- Choose smartly, and
- Act with productive social purpose.
The indelible mantra is thus: THINK > CHOOSE > ACT.
Influential Leadership is NOT talking!
Have you noticed how many people talk and talk and talk and talk…?
And, how often these self-same people are either self-appointed ‘leaders’ or given that title because of their endless talking or lofty positions and titles.
These folk are so busy talking, telling the world how smart they are, and instructing others what to do, that they don’t think, choose or act.
If someone is just endless talk, they’re talkers, NOT Leaders!
You will find them in homes, school yards, teams, business and communities—and especially in boardrooms and parliament.
Here are three rules of thumb on the matter:
- If someone talks more than they listen, they are imposters.
- If someone talks more than they do, they are vacuous.
- If someone talks one thing but does another, they are pretenders.
Conversing (which includes deep listening) is not talking, and it is essential to all sorts of social engagements, including Leadership and effective management. But, talking, having the gift of the gab, is neither a Leadership trait nor a proxy for sound management. Rather, it is a powerful tell-tale sign that snake-oil is being sold.
Influential Leaders think—choose—act.
If you practice Influential Leadership, tell us how you spot the charlatans. If you have not yet equipped yourself with Influential Leadership, you are invited to do so—we preach and practice.
