Those with an Apex Skill are un-boxed…
It seems that the dust has not yet settled on the results of the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
The teams that imagined they would drink from the Cup, and did not, are still scratching their heads, or berating the referees, or planning a better result in 2027.
One of these teams is the All Blacks from New Zealand, the perennial best team in the world, no matter whose hand might be on the Cup.
The All Blacks win 77% of their games.
The next best team in the world wins 63% of their games.
Enough said.
Here is my Leadership Weekly Note point.
During the past week the newly appointed All Black coach has been busy assembling his coaching team.
Every other team and their coaches are watching, trying to get a sense of what this new All Black team will look like and how they will play, and how good they might be.
So, it was with interest that I read an article quoting a former British rugby player and pundit that the philosophy of a newly appointed performance coach at the All Blacks will challenge the ‘orthodoxies and encourage players and coaches to think outside the box’.
Let us for a moment forgive the commentator for using an over-traded and now almost meaningless cliché, because it serves my purpose to illustrate Apex Thinking versus old-style thinking.
Apex Thinking and Apex Skills are not constrained by lines, inside or outside any box.
There is no box unless you create it for yourself.
Philosophically, even referencing ‘out of the box thinking’ suggests there is a box, nearby, and it is what defined you in the past, but now you are out of it.
Burn the box.
Dump the box.
Leave the confines of a reference point that constrained you and still does.
One of the reasons so few people (and teams, businesses, countries) can achieve their potential is their fear of going too far from their ‘box’.
Influential Leadership teaches us to go first, to go farther and to be Apex Skilled!
Don’t be defined by a box, think and function beyond the lines… that is what Influential Leaders do!
