Master Your Time

Master your time Influential Leadership

Time: An Ever-Present Paradox

Dr Seuss captures it well:

‘December is here before it’s June!’

It often feels like time is a vortex spinning us ever faster as we speed through life, but this is an illusion.

Time moves at its own measured pace, as it has since it began—if it did.

The real question is what we do with our time.

For instance, three hundred and sixty-four days have already slipped past since the first Leadership Weekly Note of 2024.  Re-read it here: Leadership is a Verb.

Time is a Resource

There’s a maxim that goes:

  • It’s not how long you live, but how much you do!

What a pity if we live long, but our lives lack substance.  It’s better to live a full life within a brief span.  This isn’t about being busy, but about the quality and value of what we achieve.  In Influential Leadership, we refer to this as being productive.

Marcus Aurelius, in his Meditations, advises us to give maximum meaning to our lives by being selective with our time and effort:

  • If you seek tranquility, do less, do what’s essential… [not nothing] do less, better.  Most of what we say and do is not essential.  If you can do only what is necessary, you’ll have more time and more composure.  Ask yourself at every moment, ‘Is this necessary?’

Although we know time is valuable and slips away easily, our use of it often contradicts this principle.

Aurelius’ advice, penned almost 2,000 years ago, is even more challenging in the AI Age, where we face an overload of information, options, and possibilities.

An earlier Leadership Weekly Note presents a range of Aurelius’ life and leadership principles; you will find it here:  Principles for a Better Life.

Reflecting on 2024

The past twelve months are certainly history, but the impact of our actions and inactions continues.

Whatever we did or didn’t do lives on in our lives and others’.

Hopefully, we planted the right seeds in fertile soil during the past 364 days, so we and others will reap the benefits for many seasons.

Looking Ahead to 2025

Let’s turn from the past to the present and future, where we can still influence and shape our lives.

No matter what crosses your path in 2025, you are responsible for how you engage with every event, condition, and circumstance.  Your engagement with life is your business, and it defines you.

Each of us engages with life in three ways:

  1. Proactive Engagement: Anticipate and act ahead of time. This is the prized behaviour of Influential Leadership, the most productive type of engagement.
  2. Responsive Engagement: Address situations as they arise with thoughtful consideration and strategic action, transforming challenges into opportunities.
  3. Reactive Engagement: Respond impulsively without foresight or a plan.  While sometimes seemingly necessary, this approach is less productive and can lead to undesirable outcomes.

Leadership Moments in 2025

Life events, conditions, and circumstances are filled with Leadership Moments that demand the practice of leadership.  Your Leadership Moments of 2025 lie in wait—they are opportunities and challenges that you must engage with.

To make your time count and live beyond the necessities of life, you must be prepared, capable, and ready.

To successfully navigate each Leadership Moment, you must:

  1. See It: Develop Leadership consciousness (awareness) to identify opportunities.
  2. Be Equipped: Equip yourself with Leadership knowledge and skills that will make you capable of Leading.
  3. Choose to Lead: Make the conscious decision to lead—to act.

When all three elements are connected and aligned—see, be equipped and choose to act—there’s potential for productive outcomes.

Your Influential Leadership Activism in 2025

It is up to you how 2025 turns out for you and those in your spheres of influence.  Life will happen with its variety of events, conditions, and circumstances.  The variable in the equation is you.

Plan and act to use your time productively.  Imagine counting down the clock towards midnight on 31 December 2025delighted by what you have achieved in each Leadership Moment you have mastered.

See.  Be equipped.  Choose to act.  Results—productive outcomes.

Best Leadership wishes for 2025.
